The Horus Steel Solar Canopy is a 10-metre-wide dual-row gullwing canopy designed for fast deployment on sites where embedded foundations are not practical. Instead of excavation or piling, Horus uses engineered precast ballast foundations positioned directly on the ground surface. This allows the canopy to be installed quickly while minimising disruption to the existing site. Each structural module spans 8.75 metres and covers six parking bays arranged across two rows. The gullwing roof geometry provides balanced east–west solar exposure, improving generation during both morning and afternoon hours. With modular expansion capability and a distinctive architectural form, Horus offers a high-performance solar canopy system suited to a wide range of commercial and public environments.
Available in kit form or fully installed. This solar canopy comes with solar panels. Our solar canopies and carports can be supplied without solar panels and electricals, should you wish to fit your own. Options can include self-contained systems with Energy Storage (EESS), CCTV Cameras, Internal and/or External Lighting and of course EV charging (EVCPs). Using our amazing range of EV charge products. Colour options are available as well as ideas for branding and/or offering advertising space.

The Horus – Modular Steel Solar Canopy is manufactured in the UK using British steel wherever possible. The primary structural framework is formed from universal beams, typically 533 x 210 x 92 sections, selected to provide structural integrity, stiffness, and long-term durability under wind and snow loading conditions.

Roof purlins are manufactured from 200 × 100 × 6.3 mm rectangular hollow section, RHS steel, spanning between primary beams to support the roofing system and photovoltaic array. All structural steelwork is hot-dip galvanised to a minimum average coating thickness of 85 microns in accordance with BS EN ISO 1461, providing long-term corrosion protection.

For enhanced aesthetic finish and additional surface durability, canopies can be spray-painted over the galvanised coating. Anthracite grey is a popular specification choice; any RAL colour can be provided to suit site requirements or planning conditions. Roof sheets are high-performance plastisol-coated steel roofing sheets, supplied in a range of colours to complement the chosen steel finish. The roofing system is designed for long service life, weather resistance, and low maintenance performance.

Horus was one of the most important gods of ancient Egyptian religion, associated with the sky, kingship, and divine protection. Often depicted as a falcon or as a man with a falcon’s head, Horus represented the living power of the heavens. His right eye symbolised the sun and his left eye the moon, and together they represented balance and cosmic order. Egyptian pharaohs were believed to be the earthly embodiment of Horus, ruling as the living Horus during their lifetime and becoming Osiris, the god of the underworld, after death. In Egyptian mythology, Horus is best known for his struggle against Set, the god of chaos and disorder. After Set murdered Horus’s father, Osiris, Horus fought a long series of battles to avenge him and reclaim the throne of Egypt. Their conflict symbolised the eternal struggle between order and chaos. Eventually Horus triumphed, restoring balance and becoming the rightful ruler. This victory reinforced the idea that the pharaoh’s authority came from the divine order established by the gods. Horus was widely worshipped across Egypt, particularly in temples such as Edfu, one of the best-preserved temples of the ancient world. His most famous symbol is the Eye of Horus, a powerful protective emblem believed to provide healing, protection, and restoration. The symbol became one of the most recognised icons of Egyptian culture and was often used as an amulet to guard against harm and bring good fortune.

A Note On Parking Bay Sizes:

When assessing the area needed for staff and customer parking, it should be noted that the current UK norm for parking spaces is 2.4m wide by 4.8 m long. However please note that several models of modern vehicles are more than 4.8m long. The recommended space for manoeuvring (roadways) between bays is 6m.

These dimensions are neither minimum nor written in tablets of stone and may be revised to suit your particular needs, but remember that good access and wider bays aid efficient use of the parking area and are much more pleasant for your customers to use.

Image
For more information on parking in the UK visit: The British Parking Association
Bay Sizes For Motorists With Disabilities: The BSI British Standards Code provides some guidance as to what is required - disabled access parking spaces should be 2400mm x 4800mm with a 1200mm wide marked access zone between spaces and a 1200mm wide safety zone for boot access. Government guidelines (Inclusive Mobility published by DfT) recommend that 6% of parking be allocated to disabled people unless otherwise covered by local planning regulations. The guidance also recommends how to identify these spaces, with special markings and signage.

EV Charger Bay Sizes: It is recommended that additional access zones between parking bays be left for EV charging.  This allows some vehicles to plug and charge from the side. These bays should also be marked and include eye-level signage.

Disabled EV Charger Bays: As the number of electric vehicles in the UK grows as will the requirement for EV charger bays.  There are currently no guidelines on providing disabled parking bays with EV chargers so although not essential we recommend creating EV charger bays with the required 1.2m marked area between the bays and thus automatically making all your EV charger bays suitable for people with disabilities as well as allowing space for vehicles that charge from the side.

KaraSolar use a standard parking bay size of 2.50m wide by 5.00m long

Image
To reduce the potential risks, we recommend clearly displaying canopy height restrictions with signs at eye level located at the car park entrance and on the canopies themselves. Allowances should also be made at the ends of the structures to prevent high-sided vehicles from colliding with the canopy while manoeuvring.  Where possible, implementing a height restriction at the point of entry is an even more effective solution.

KaraSolar Canopies Height Clearance is a Standard 2.50m

A Note On Vehicle Heights:

When planning the placement of solar canopies, it is essential to consider the maximum height of vehicles that may use the car park, not just those parking under the canopy. Thought should be given to high-sided vehicles manoeuvring around the structures.  Our solar carports and canopies are typically designed with a vehicle clearance height of 2.50 metres.  We can increase this height, however, this would increase the overall canopy height and potentially create planning issues and/or lower the roof pitch therefore lowering the solar performance.  An increase in canopy height may also make it necessary to increase the canopy's specifications.

Domestic Vehicles: All our Solar Canopies and Carports comfortably accommodate all vehicles intended for domestic use. One of the tallest in this category, the Land Rover Discovery, stands at 2.00 metres high. The vehicles shown in most of our drawings are the Jaguar F-Pace (1.66 metres high) and/or the Jaguar I-Pace (1.56 metres high).

Commercial Vehicles: If the car park is frequently used by commercial vehicles, a 2.50-metre clearance could potentially cause issues. Common commercial van heights include:

H1 - Standard - up to 2.50m
H2 - High Top - up to 2.90m
H3 - Super High Top - up to 3.20m

For example, the height of a VW Crafter can range from 2.30 metres to 3.20 metres high, depending on the model.  Of course box vans and lorries can be even higher.

The Horus Steel Solar Canopy is a dual-row gullwing solar carport designed to deliver balanced solar generation and rapid installation using ballasted foundations. Unlike traditional canopy systems that require embedded foundations, Horus is mounted on engineered precast concrete ballast blocks. These blocks sit directly on the ground surface and anchor the steel structure through weight and structural geometry. This approach allows large solar canopies to be installed quickly while avoiding excavation and major civil works. Ballasted Foundation System Horus uses heavy precast concrete ballast foundations that support the canopy without penetrating the ground. This provides several advantages: No excavation or ground penetration Reduced civil engineering costs Faster installation timelines Ability to deploy on temporary or restricted sites Ballasted systems are particularly useful where underground services, planning restrictions, or temporary site use make traditional foundations impractical. Gullwing Roof Geometry The Horus canopy features a distinctive gullwing roof profile with twin roof pitches. This configuration allows one side of the canopy to capture morning sunlight while the opposite side captures afternoon sunlight. The result is balanced east–west energy generation that smooths solar output across the day. The gullwing form also creates increased clearance heights near the canopy edges, improving vehicle manoeuvrability and enhancing the overall spatial quality beneath the structure. Modular Configuration Horus is built around a repeatable modular grid designed for scalable solar deployment. Each module spans 8.75 metres and covers six parking bays arranged as two rows of three. Starter installations include extended end caps that accommodate access clearances around the support structure, while additional modules can be connected to extend the canopy across larger parking areas. This modular system allows Horus to expand from small installations to large multi-module solar arrays. Materials and Construction The canopy structure uses circular hollow section steel uprights combined with RHS structural members and purlins. Roofing is formed from durable PVC-coated steel sheets designed for long-term outdoor performance. Structural steel components are hot-dip galvanised and spray finished for corrosion protection, while roof sheets are available in a range of colour options to suit project requirements. Applications Horus is well suited to sites requiring rapid installation combined with balanced solar generation. Typical applications include: Retail parks Public authority car parks Transport facilities Commercial developments Temporary energy installations By combining gullwing architecture, modular scalability, and ballasted foundations, Horus provides a flexible solar canopy solution capable of delivering strong renewable generation wherever groundworks are limited.

Examples of Horus – Modular Steel Solar Canopy Parking Layouts, Dimensions, Solar Capacity, and Expected Performance

All KaraSolar solar canopies and carports are fully modular. While the widths can be adjusted slightly to suit specific project needs, the modular design ensures they can be extended to any desired length, providing flexibility for future expansion. To achieve the most cost-effective solution (in terms of kW per £), we recommend maximising the canopy spans.

The solar estimates provided below are based on installing the specified canopies, oriented south-facing at Winchester Park and Ride. For detailed information on how we calculate solar performance, please visit our section on OpenSolar.
