Hybrid and/or Glulam Solar Canopies
Hybrid canopies offer the best of both worlds, combining the natural warmth and visual appeal of timber with the strength and reliability of modern structural materials. They are designed to deliver a softer, more architectural aesthetic without compromising on performance, durability, or safety.
A range of hybrid configurations can be used depending on the project requirements. Timber support sections paired with steel purlins provide an efficient balance of appearance and structural capability, with the steel elements handling the primary loads across longer spans. Flitched beams, where timber and steel are combined into a single structural member, allow increased strength while maintaining a predominantly timber appearance. Glulam structures, formed from laminated timber, offer a high strength, engineered solution with consistent performance and a refined finish, making them particularly well suited to premium or design led environments.
Hybrid canopies are especially well suited to public car parks, where both visual impact and robustness are important. While timber provides excellent compressive strength, it is less resistant to lateral impact forces. For this reason, hybrid systems often incorporate reinforced lower sections, such as steel or concrete bases, or larger, more substantial timber legs. These can be enhanced with stone or brick slip finishes to maintain a cohesive aesthetic while significantly improving impact resistance.
Additional protective measures can also be integrated into the design. These may include increased spacing around support columns, raised kerbs, planted buffer zones, or discreet steel safety barriers. Together, these strategies reduce the risk of vehicle impact while preserving the clean, open appearance of the canopy.
The result is a flexible and visually appealing canopy solution that meets the practical demands of public environments while elevating the overall design quality of the space.

Timber Solar Carports - Available in Oak, Larch or Douglas Fir
view all Timber Solar CarportsOur timber solar carports are available as a fully timber construction option, using high-quality UK-grown and milled oak, larch, or Douglas fir. These structures offer a warm, natural aesthetic that complements residential settings, particularly where visual appeal is a key consideration.
However, due to the structural characteristics of timber, these canopies are recommended primarily for domestic applications. The achievable span is typically limited to a maximum of two parking bays, and the lateral strength of timber uprights is significantly lower than that of steel. As a result, they are more vulnerable to impact damage, even at relatively low vehicle speeds, which could lead to structural failure of the support elements.
For these reasons, timber-only canopies are not generally advised for commercial or high-traffic environments, where durability, impact resistance, and larger spans are required.
