Transform your carpark into a beacon of sustainability
A Note On Parking Bay Sizes:
When assessing the area needed for staff and customer parking, it should be noted that the current UK norm for parking spaces is 2.4m wide by 4.8 m long. However please note that several models of modern vehicles are more than 4.8m long. The recommended space for manoeuvring (roadways) between bays is 6m.
These dimensions are neither minimum nor written in tablets of stone and may be revised to suit your particular needs, but remember that good access and wider bays aid efficient use of the parking area and are much more pleasant for your customers to use.
EV Charger Bay Sizes: It is recommended that additional access zones between parking bays be left for EV charging. This allows some vehicles to plug and charge from the side. These bays should also be marked and include eye-level signage.
Disabled EV Charger Bays: As the number of electric vehicles in the UK grows as will the requirement for EV charger bays. There are currently no guidelines on providing disabled parking bays with EV chargers so although not essential we recommend creating EV charger bays with the required 1.2m marked area between the bays and thus automatically making all your EV charger bays suitable for people with disabilities as well as allowing space for vehicles that charge from the side.
KaraSolar use a standard parking bay size of 2.50m wide by 5.00m long
KaraSolar Canopies Height Clearance is a Standard 2.50m
A Note On Vehicle Heights:
Domestic Vehicles: All our Solar Canopies and Carports comfortably accommodate all vehicles intended for domestic use. One of the tallest in this category, the Land Rover Discovery, stands at 2.00 metres high. The vehicles shown in most of our drawings are the Jaguar F-Pace (1.66 metres high) and/or the Jaguar I-Pace (1.56 metres high).
Commercial Vehicles: If the car park is frequently used by commercial vehicles, a 2.50-metre clearance could potentially cause issues. Common commercial van heights include:
H1 - Standard - up to 2.50m
H2 - High Top - up to 2.90m
H3 - Super High Top - up to 3.20m
For example, the height of a VW Crafter can range from 2.30 metres to 3.20 metres high, depending on the model. Of course box vans and lorries can be even higher.

Finished Site Use: |
Public Car Park |
Finished Surface: |
Carpark surface to be retarmacked. Parking bay lines painted (colour to be confirmed). |
Site Suitability: |
The proposed site falls within the required parameters for all KaraSolar Steel Canopies in windspeed, snow load, altitude, and environmental exposure. Unless a previous report has been issued a full geotechnical site investigation is required to determine the foundation design parameters and ensure that the minimum requirements of the design have been met or to determine the new foundation design specification and/or type of foundation to be adopted. KaraSolar can undertake a geotechnical survey on the client’s behalf if required, an additional cost would be applicable for this service and would be billed under project design costs. |
Underground Services: |
We would require a site services plan of the proposed site location before confirmation to establish the existence of any underground services. |
Drainage: |
We would require a site services plan to establish the location of any existing drainage services to establish the best method of connecting the proposed structures to a suitable drainage system. |
Electrical Connection: |
KaraSolar will install a steel GRP vented housing unit to contain the inverter and consumer unit for the structure. The location of the housing unit will be confirmed during a site visit with the client. Connection to your current electrical TBC. This solar system will require authorisation from you Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to connect to the national grid. KaraSolar can take care of this on your behalf. |
Solar Shading: |
It would appear there are not shading issues on any canopies. If it is necessary for any trees to be destroyed during this project, KaraSolar will undertake to plant at least double the number of trees of a suitable species on the same or alternative site. |
Known Site Hazards: |
Public Car Park. Site fencing is required to allow continued use of the car park during installation. Underground Hazards: Unknown Above Head Hazards: Unknown |
Waste Removal: |
KaraSolar will ensure the site is left clean, tidy and ready for public use. All waste materials will be recycled wherever possible. |
Schedule of Works: |
To be confirmed. |
Site Assumptions
The Structure(s)
V1.0
Notes On The Structures - V1.0
Version 1 of this design proposal uses the Arinna Solar Canopy. This canopy requires a 6m width. It would appear this structure will fit in this space. However a site survey is required to confirm our assumption. Should it be that we can not make a 6m wide canopy here we could offer the Thor canopy as this requires 5m, however this would result is fewer parking bays and panels.
The Arinna solar carport is ideal for any commercial car park, office, shop or even for domestic use. The elegant and simple design means this structure looks great outside any building, even an architect’s office.
This modular solar car canopy can be supplied at any required span, the add-on units allow you to create a length of solar car canopy as long as you require. Starter units can span up to 12.50m (5 parking bays) and each add-on unit can increase the span by up to 7.50m (3 parking bays) between legs, this offers multiple options for structure lengths and parking bay layouts. Addon units can be installed with the starter unit or added at a future date.

GENERAL: The design of the structure contains the following site location limitations:
Any sites that fall outside this criterion are required to be independently checked and reported to KaraSolar prior to fabrication to determine the new framework design specification. KaraSolar can undertake a full site survey if required, an additional cost would be applicable for this service and would be billed under project design costs. |
FOUNDATIONS: A full geotechnical site investigation is required to determine the foundation design parameters and ensure that the minimum requirements of the design have been met. If the requirements are not met the Client is responsible for contacting KaraSolar to determine the new foundation design specification and / or type of foundation to be adopted. KaraSolar can undertake a geotechnical survey on the client’s behalf if required, an additional cost would be applicable for this service and would be billed under project design costs. |
CONCRETE: Foundations must not be cast within aggressive soil environments, free from sulphates, chlorides, and saline environments. All concrete work to be constructed in accordance with the National Structural Concrete Specification, latest edition. All material and workmanship shall be in accordance with BS EN 1992 / BS 8110 including all latest amendments. |
STEELWORK: This steelwork specification is not suitable for sites located within 500m from a coastline, saline, chloride and/or sulphur dioxide environments, within swimming pool and high humidity environments, or subject to airborne corrosive elements. If sites of this nature are required then the specification of the steelwork needs to be discussed with KaraSolar prior to fabrication. Structural steelwork is to be in accordance with the National Structural Steelwork Specification for Building Construction (latest edition). All structural steelwork to be hot rolled mild steel Grade S355, and all mild steel plates to be Grade S275 to BS EN 10025 (latest edition), unless noted otherwise. All bolts and nuts to be Grade 8.8 to BS 4190 (latest edition), unless noted otherwise. All bolts to have washers to BS 4320 (latest edition), under the nuts. All internal bolts, nuts and washers are to be sherardized to BS EN 737-8 (latest edition) so that no additional painting is required after erection. All external bolts are to be hot dip galvanized to BS 7371-6 (latest edition). Where splice connections have been noted, all bolts to be High Strength Friction Grip (HSFG) bolts. All steelwork below ground to receive a high build epoxy coating to give a dry film thickness of minimum 450μm. |
